Shiatsu
- Reduce your Stress Levels
- Increase your Flexibility
What is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu is a form of bodywork using techniques such as thumb and palm pressure, stretching, rotation of joints, and rocking movements. Literally translated shiatsu means finger pressure. Its origins can be traced back to Anma, a form of press and stroke bodywork in 17th Century Japan. Today it encompasses a wide range of styles and techniques such as Zen, Namikoshi, Ohashi, Seiki and Healing Shiatsu.
How does Shiatsu work?
Originating from Japan Shiatsu is based on a tradition that views the world as vital energy. This vital energy is known as Ki and runs through pathways in the body. These channels are called meridians. Good health requires smooth flowing Ki through the meridians. If something upsets the free flow of Ki it is possible that physical symptoms, emotional or psychological imbalances can occur.
Shiatsu diagnoses these energy imbalances and uses thumb and palm pressure, gentle holding and stretches to improve the flow of Ki. As it is a holistic complementary therapy the whole body is worked on during a treatment.
What does a Shiatsu session involve?
The session will usually take place on a futon, a thick padded mat on the floor and will last about an hour. The first treatment is a little longer so that I can gather details about your medical history, lifestyle and general health. Throughout the session you will remain fully clothed.
To obtain the maximum benefit it is advisable not to drink alcohol or eat a heavy meal in the two hours before your treatment. Wear comfortable clothing eg. jogging trousers, a loose fitting top and socks. After the treatment drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and rest as much as you can.
